Saturday proved busy for the Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross, which responded to fires today in Manchester, Norwalk, Hamden and Torrington. The Red Cross is helping eight people in three families as a result of the fires.
The Red Cross is helping a family of two – one adult and one child – after they were displaced by a fire on Arcelia Drive in Manchester. The Red Cross is providing financial assistance for emergency clothing and food needs, as well as comfort kits that contain personal care and toiletry needs. The Red Cross was also able to provide a stuffed toy for the child. “Many times, children aren’t able to salvage a cherished toy from a fire scene. We keep stuffed toys on hand to give them a new friend to take with them,” said Connecticut Chapter spokesperson Paul Shipman.
The Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross provided canteen service for emergency responders at the scene of a fire on Orange Street in Norwalk. The family displaced by the fire declined assistance. The Red Cross will provide canteen service to emergency responders upon request. In such cases, the Red Cross will provide hot and cold beverages and snacks. “The service helps responders to stay hydrated and provides a small measure of comfort during the very hard work of a fire response,” Shipman said.
The Red Cross responded to a fire on Treadwell Street in Hamden, providing temporary lodging and financial assistance for emergency food needs for a family of three – one adult and two children – after they were displaced by a fire this afternoon.

Connecticut Chapter spokesperson Paul Shipman said that winter is generally a busy time for fire responses and urged people to use care when heating their homes. “Make sure your furnace and chimney are in good working order. Don’t leave space heaters, fires or candles burning unattended,” Shipman said.
Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers. |
